What makes Shanghai addictive? Berlin

Exhibition of graphic-design from Shanghai, 2007

”What makes Shanghai addictive?” is an mixed media event and exhibition of mass produced images, which are printed on posters and declared to be bulk goods. “What makes Shanghai addictive?” is art for the masses, it is tangible and it challenges the audience to satisfy their addiction to unique motifs and urban art. 14 Shanghai based graphic designers and artists asked themselves what makes their home base addictive and converted their ideas in a (photo)graphic way. The result is 14 unique artworks, seeing behind the curtains of Shanghai, one of the most exciting international cities and China‘s window to the world. The works will be presented and available for audiences to collect from September 11th until September 14th at the Kuppelsaal of the Rodeo-Club at the ehemalige Postfuhramt in Berlin.

Shanghai‘s art scene is young, fast and international. The city is considered one of the most exciting and ambitious metropolitan places in the world wide. The number of independent designers, artists and private collectives is constantly growing and represents an important opposition to government organisations in China. 14 local heroes dealt with the question what is so special about their hometown, what is the fascination and the appeal of Shanghai and why are human beings addicted to this boom-town.

The result is 14 unique, multi-faceted graphic designs and illustrations - pictures and artworks with very personal perspectives of the city. There are many ways to see Shanghai. The point of view of the artists includes descriptions like “Ibiza of Asia“, “colourful, funny, irregular diverse - the city is like a chameleon or “socialist heaven“. However you look at Shanghai, it is China‘s most international city, it captivates and it is magnetic. If you take time to look deeper into the city you‘ll get lost in it. What makes Shanghai/Berlin addictive is a creative exchange between the metropolises Berlin and Shanghai. In September 2006, artist from Berlin previously exhibited artworks in Shanghai about their own fascination of the German capital. Now their Chinese peers have the chance to present their imaginings of their own city in Berlin. The event will be an interactive plattform and a meeting place for creative and interested people.

In addition to the exhibition there will be workshops between the artists from both cities. The artists from Shanghai will collaborate with the Berlin designers on three dimensional designs which expand upon the works in the show. The plattform will be used to enhance existing contacts and ideas. The exhibition website www.shanghai-adictive.com opens the project to a global audience. Visitors will have the opportunity to get more information about the project, as well as to add comments and their own designs. A publication covering both events and exhibitions in Shanghai and Berlin will be published in November 2007. It will be available in German and Chinese. “What makes ..... addictive?” is the start of an idea which will be continued in other cities all over the world. The idea is to create a global creative network and international exchange for arists in the most vibrant cities all over the globe.

What makes Berlin addictive?

Exhibition of Berlin Graphic Design, Media Design and Street Art in Shanghai, 2006

For a couple of years, Berlin has been developing its very own, original appeal and dynamic in terms of design and is establishing itself as an inter-disciplinary trend workshop. The multi-faceted „Berlin Style“ and the unique atmosphere of the city mutually shape and influence one another. The exhibition takes Berlin’s image as an open, demanding pop-cultural metropolis as main idea and asks young graphic and media artists: „What makes Berlin addictive?” Current positions and ideas from Graphic and Media Design are exhibited together with “wanted style” posters with statements and short descriptions of the designers.

On display are works by:

The goal is to emphasize the variety of the scenes and tendencies in Berlin and to hereby show as broad a spectrum as possible. The “wanted style” posters give lively and individual, partly very personal statements and insights into Berlin and the Berlin attitude towards life. It is impossible to imagine the streets and squares of Berlin without Street Art. Street Art has become an integral, if not controversial part of the urban appearance of the city.

For the exhibition project „What makes Berlin addictive?“, the artist Xinyu Bai and the designers Jing Wang and Yi Lu, who live and work in Berlin, will document the current status of Street Art in Berlin in the summer of 2006. The photographs will be presented within the scope of the exhibition.

ArtMbassy Furniture Edition

Furniture Edition for the Art Gallery ArtMbassy

The gallery ARTMBASSY Berlin is planning the opening of further branches in Germany and Europe. To give the individual locations a consistent appearance and to emphasize their common identity and underlying idea, a furniture edition is being specially developed for the gallery. Focus is the development of bench / single seating elements as well as tables and counters to give each respective gallery at their different locations an unmistakable identity. The entire collection is light in appearance and folds for transport, emphasizing the idea of travel of the individual exhibitions and the flexibility of the gallery concept.

The selected materials HPL and powder-coated steel are high quality in appearance but robust in composition. The objects manufactured for the respective locations are labeled with the corresponding name of the place. The color coding white -> interaction area and black -> structure for tables and counters is reversed for the seating. Hereby, the tonal weighting in the logo is illustrated by means of the furniture collection. In terms of function, the collection is geared towards the basic needs of the gallery business (sale – information – communication – inspiration).

LA-B

Art favelas at DESIGNMAI 2006

On the west coast of the U.S., Graphic Design and Art blend with urban phenomena. The origins of Graffiti Art and influences of various sub-cultures ( Mexico, Asia, Surf and Punk Culture ) have a noticeable effect on Art and Design in the melting pot Los Angeles.
Nine “artists” from the heart of the mega city L.A., who work at the crossover of commercial Graphics, Street Art and Art inspired by the city, are the protagonists presented in the Designmai Exhibition LA-B. The curation and design of the exhibition was realized by Hidden Fortress, the agency of Richard Duardo (Los Angeles) and Ingo Strobel (Berlin) and by Flip Sellin from the Design Studio Coordination (Berlin).

On display are works by:
Chaz, Camille Rose Garcia, Richard Duardo, Sheppard Fairey, Steve Olson, Dave Lefner, Courtney Reid, Britt Ehringer, Artemio Rodrigues

On the 64 sqm area, crytalline favela-style housing structures are created from leftover materials of civilization. Inside these structures, artistic works photographed by Steve Vaughn (Blade Runner) are shown on old television sets.

The area becomes a "Microcity", which exhibits the works from Los Angeles in the form of installations in four “houses”. The intentional diminishment and distortion of the simple housing structures demands an increased curiosity from the visitor to be able to exploit the works.
.
For the sake of completeness, these "micro-climates" are complemented by current design objects by Ingo Strobel and Flip Sellin

Restaurant Lounge at the Art Forum Berlin, 2005

Monopol - Magazin für Kunst und Leben - invites to a “Kunstpause für Bilderstürmer” at the 10th Art Forum in Berlin.
The Monopol Lounge is located on a gallery of 140 sqm in area in exhibition hall 18, constructed in the early thirties. The Lounge overlooks the goings in the over 100 galleries of contemporary art below. In cooperation with the Monopol Magazine and the Hotel Brandenburger Hof, Coordination designed and planned the complete public appearance and coordinated the implementation thereof.

Our claim to the design was to develop a unique formal language for this project, which would feature a consistent quality and recognition factor in its entirety as well as in detail: Like with the stool, we have deliberately attempted throughout the whole environment to unite worlds which seem not combinable at first. The visual and atmospheric bracket is formed by a 22m back-lit curtain wall with a new edition of Berlin artist Jonathan Meese, which surrounds the space and grants the visitor a welcome break from the fair’s hustle and bustle.
On the tables, one finds tableware and table accessories by KPM which were assorted specifically for the Lounge.
