The Phone House Flagship Store Frankfurt/Main

Retail design for telecommunication company The Phone House

The british telecommunications company The Phone House commissioned COORDINATION to develop a new retail design concept and display system. The new flagship store, located directly on Frankfurt's primary shopping precinct Zeil, opened its doors in March 2007. On 240 sqm COORDINATION created a fresh corporate environment for The Phone House - in the style of a boutique with an adjacent business lounge. The new environment translates the company's innovative character into a unique three-dimensional environment.

The Phone House Guerilla Store Cologne

Pop Up Store for telecommunication company The Phone House

With "The Phone Exchange Workshop" the telecommunication company 'The Phone House' goes guerilla. For a store in Germany COORDINATION in collaboration with 'Berlinomat - Platform for Berlin Design' came up with a retail concept very unusual in the telecommunications sector: a temporary Pop Up Store. In the fashion industry this is a widely accepted form of guerilla marketing, but taken out of this context and applied to a telecommunications store, this form of retail environment is an absolute novelty.

Right in time for the heavy christmas shopping days, the Pop Up Store was launched last december - for 12 weeks The Phone House moved into one of the long and narrow shop spaces on Germany's oldest shopping precinct, Hohe Strasse in Cologne. COORDINATION created a space with a vibrant bipolar atmosphere, pulsating between the two extremes 'workshop' and 'castle'. In the entrance area a very special device drew the attention of passers-by and led them into the store: With a giant drill machine customers could drill a hole into their old phone, nail it right on one of the long side walls and write their personal dedication next to it. By doing so, they contributed to the graphic concept used throughout the store - except the price tags, all graphics were hand-made and designed by the Berlin-based swiss design duo jacquesetbrigitte.com.

Besides the graphic there was even more for the customers to discover. Those people nosy enough to look inside the doors of the worn-out metal lockers were rewarded with small gadgets like 50's-style pin-up pictures and other small details that can also be found in any 'proper' workshop. Along the lockers and the ad-hoc presentation modules made of rough white euro pallets with a sleek glass surface, customers were led from the lively workshop area towards the more quiet and sophisticated back end of the space, where they could get consultation on their best plan options and choose a new cell phone model among those they strolled past on the way. For this procedure the store provided two different spots: Those in a hurry could make their decisions on the standing consultation counter at the rear end of the tube-like store space, whereas for longer consideration customers could sit on the white ad-hoc lounge bed in the cozy back corner and take a relaxing break before heading outside again into the noisy rush of pre-christmas shopping.

Filmgarten Hamburg

Interior Design for a new video store, 2004

The Filmgarten is a new video store in the center of Hamburg. An alternative to the common video rental, the Filmgarten aims to serve the sophisticated customer with a specific program of high quality films. Our task was to develop a clear design with sophisticated detailing to implement the Filmgarten pretence in built space.
To emphasize the simple geometry of the space, we developed a new and innovative presentation system which abandons the shelf structure, common to video stores: all DVD and VHS covers are fitted with magnets on the back side and thus can be affixed to smooth metal surfaces. With this presentation format, we underline the special character of the Filmgarten, and at the same time create a playful experience when detaching the respective covers.

Interior Design for a novel video store

Reel change: The video store Filmgarten has gone into symbiosis with the Kinowelt daughter Arthaus and since October 2006, presents itself in Leipzig for the first time with a novel concept: The combination of movie rental and DVD sales as well as Classic-DVDs from the Arthaus Program offers the movie aficionado everything beyond the blockbuster mainstream that one can wish for a successful movie evening. The retail environment is topped off by the integration of a branch of the bookseller Zweitausenundeins , complementing the sophisticated media offer with film related literature and CD Soundtracks.

For the Filmgarten, Coordination has developed a flexible display system which translates the new Filmgarten brand image into a 3D environment and is easily applicable to the respective spacial situations of the coming branches. The display gondolas and stela, just as the presentation tables ,take on the triangle shape of the logo in their basic form and are equipped with a coasting frame. Thus, one has the option in every room to form clusters out of several elements or to create exposed display situations according to the respective needs and wishes. For special events such as movie screenings inside the branch, it is thereby possible to quickly adjust the spacial situation. The materials used stand back – all surfaces are white, with the covers of CDs and DVDs being the only colored elements and generating a rhythmic structure in the rows of shelves. Merely the warm Filmgarten orange is used as an accent color to create space – thus, the cash desk widely exudes a pleasant atmosphere and reminds even the last cinema sourpuss that it is really time, to watch a truly good movie.
